Electronic Shelf Labels (ESL) are digital price tags used in retail environments to replace traditional paper labels. Each ESL is a small electronic display—usually e-ink or LCD—that shows product pricing, promotions, or other information. These displays are wirelessly connected to a central store management system, allowing prices and product information to be updated automatically in real time. This eliminates the need for employees to manually change hundreds or thousands of paper tags, saving time and reducing the risk of pricing errors.

At the heart of an ESL system is a wireless communication network, often using low-power radio frequency (RF), Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). The store’s central software connects to the retailer’s POS (point-of-sale) or ERP (enterprise resource planning) system, ensuring every price change is instantly synchronized. When an update is made—whether a sale, markdown, or restock—the system transmits the new data to the correct ESL tag.

Most ESLs use e-ink display technology, similar to what’s found in e-readers, because it consumes power only when the screen is refreshed. This means a typical ESL can last five to ten years on a single coin-cell battery. The screens are easy to read, even under bright store lighting, and can show prices, barcodes, QR codes, or product information in multiple colors (commonly black, white, and red).

For retailers, ESLs offer major efficiency gains. Pricing accuracy improves since updates come directly from the main database, and staff can focus more on customer service rather than manual updates. For shoppers, ESLs ensure that shelf prices always match register prices, building trust and reducing confusion. Some advanced systems even integrate with customer smartphones, allowing shoppers to scan ESLs for reviews, inventory levels, or personalized discounts.
